Antique 19thc Victorian Silver Plated Kettle On Stand, James Dixon & Sons, C1885:
A superb quality antique Victorian silver plated (EPBM) tea kettle on stand, with original burner, manufactured by James Dixon & Sons circa 1885.
The kettle is of ornate decoration, with S shaped handle supports with vine leaf decoration where it attaches to the top of the kettle. The stand is of naturalistic tree branch form which houses the original burner in the centre.
The kettle bears the makers mark to the base of the Bugle and Banner, JD&S in Gothic script for James Dixon & Sons, and EPBM. It also bears the pattern number E305.
The first corporate trade mark of the trumpet (bugle) and banner was granted in 1879, and the second with the name was added in 1890. It is also claimed that the trumpet with banner trade mark was officially registered in 1881 though being used prior to that.
Dixon's costing book
of 1879 includes designs by Christopher Dresser, registered from 1880, and
these were produced until at least 1885, according to the trade catalogue
issued in that year.
