Antique 20th Century American Sterling Silver Gimble Cigar Lighter, Ny C.1900:
This is an Original and Beautiful, Antique, early 20th Century American Sterling Silver & table "gimble" cigar lighter. With an orb-shaped but smooth burner on a silver gimble or Gyroscope model with a dark antler handle terminating in a silver curl. The piece is in very nice condition with a ding on the one side just below the wick. Hallmarked STERLING (925-1000 Fine), year around 1900's. Maker's mark (cross, Sterling) for Joseph F. Fradley & Co. This fine maker began the business of chaser in 1866. he opened a factory in 1870 entering in partnership with Samuel B. Burr (1871) and Francis P. Locklin (1872-1874). The business was incorporated in 1890 and continued by his son Geo. F. Fradley when he retired (1902). Out of business c.1936! The piece is about 9" in overall length, 2-1/4" wide at the gimbal, and 2-1/2" high at the wick! The piece is beautifully made, is quite heavy due to the Stag Handle, and appears to be weighted in Sterling Silver inside of the burner! The piece appears to be complete except for a wick cover! This is an extraordinary piece of Sterling Silver and Tobacciana for an early Table Cigar Lighter! This is a piece from a collection of lighters that will be sold over the course of time. The starting price will basically be the price based on weight for a finished piece of Sterling Silver which is normally about twice that of the spot price and percentage for Sterling Silver, however, due to the weight of the Stag Horn handle, I am going to start it reasonable for this type of piece! Winning buyer to add $10.00 for postage, insurance and delivery confirmation. PA Residents to add 6% state sales tax. Good Luck and Happy offerding!!!
