Antique American Brilliant Crystal Signed Candy Nut Bon Bon Dish -roden/ Birks:
This absolutely gorgeous bonbon dish has a brilliant white blank with deep cuts, including snowflakes and a central six-rayed star with crosshatching and sunburst designs within it.
This piece is actually Canadian Brilliant, signed to the center with the Roden mark, an “R” and a lion. Roden of Montreal, originated in the late 19th C.,was one of Canada’s premier jewelry and fine silver and crystal companies, often commissioned and eventually acquired, by Birks.
Canadian Brilliant glass cutters generally bought their flint blanks from American companies. This accounts for the brilliance of this piece. Canadian cutters continued to buy these more expensive blanks, and to favor geometric designs, for 10 to 15 years after the American cutters moved to flowing and floral patterns, often with less costly blanks.
Birks is Canada’s premier jewelry store, the Tiffany’s of Canada with top of the line jewelry, crystal and other top quality items, with prices to match. Founded in 1879, it has been and continues to be frequented by royalty and heads of state, attracted by its international cachet. Birks remains a national icon.
The dish measures 5” across and 1 ¼” tall. It is in good to fair antique condition, with age appropriate signs of wear and use. There are numerous fleabites to the teeth and underside, and chips to two of the teeth.
The brilliance and complexity of this magnificent piece mask these flaws to an amazing extent. We were able to capture some of the flaws to the teeth in our photos.
