Antique Black Forest Carved Desktop Inkstand - St George & The Dragon 1910-1912 For Sale
This is a one off unique antique Black Forest wood carving desk pen/inkwell setin the form of St.George and the Dragon
believed to have been carved over a period of two years from 1910 - 1912. The
base which is 8 1/2" (21.5cm) x 4 1/2" (11.5cm) appears to be oak
sitting on four small turned feet. The figure of St.George seated on his horse standing over the slain dragon has been
carved with amazing detail and stands 7 1/2"(19cm) high including the
base. Thetop carved sectionis made of a different type of woodandI am not absolutely sure what it is but from the bark looks like it could possibly be Birch or similar. The
rear lower section of the carving still retains
the natural shape of the tree trunk with bark which was originally lacquered
or varnished. There are a couple of surface areas with small pieces that have
peeled off and are missing. The inkwells are
pressed glass with wooden stoppers which also retain the original bark around
the outside and the top of which one has been engraved 1910. The stoppers are very loose fitting and really just sit on.
The front has an opening for laying pensin under which is inscribed 'Frans
Lang. 110.Oberammergau 1912' - hence the two year span of 1910 - 1912.
In between this inscription a section approx. 3/4" (2cm) has split at
sometime and been glued back in position. I was also told that the knights arm and top section of
his spear broke away and has also been re-fixed by glueing back in place. It
looks as though the whole carving was originally glued to the base but has at some time
come apart - it just slots back locating on the handmade dowl and would be very
easy to reglue if you wanted to. There are a few natural cracks in the underside of the oak base and a small piece missing from the back edge. There is a wonderfully rich patination to the wood.
Oberammergau isa village inBavaria, Germany which has a long traditionas a wood carving centre, the BavarianState Wood Carving School being located there.
In my opinion this piece reallyis a
'Work of Art'but I have included plenty of photos so please have a good look at these and form your own opinion. I am happy to supply more photos if required. UK Special delivery is £9.75.
