Antique Br. Hempel Sugar Box Sterling Silver -84 Russian- Gold Wash Interior:
ANTIQUE BR. HEMPEL SUGAR BOX STERLING SILVER -84 RUSSIAN- Gold Wash Interior.
This elegant Antique Russian Silver (.875) Sugar Box is in very good cosmetic condition, showing no major dings, dents, or other blemishes. The piece is marked "Br. Hempel" and I believe dates post 1908. The box is decorated with a volume of scroll work and cartouches, is unengraved, and weighs 392grams. The box measures 6 1/2 inches tall (17cm.) x 5 inches wide (13cm.) x 4 inches wide (10cm.) Thepiece still retains its' original gold wash interior, and shows little-to-no tarnish, and no wear to speak of. The Kokoshnik mark indicates the piece is .875 Silver purity, and the Greek letter looks more like the lower portion of the "T" for Kostroma than the "V" for Kiev, but this is merely my impression. There are two individual marks, one on the box's top and the second impressed on the bottom of the box. Both marks show, what seems to be a bust of a man in a round cartouche, perhaps an Assayer's mark? The piece is quite stout, and well decorated, but the original iron?hinge pinhas since rusted intopieces and no longer attaches the top to the body of the box (see photographs). No damage to the hinge, but the pin pieces will need to be removed professionally by asilversmith to be replaced. I have had this piece in my collection for several years, always polishing by hand, never an acid dip, but the scroll work will need more patient attention I would imagine. Overall, a lovely piece of Eastern European craftsmanship.
