The birth of the "Xuande Censers”, which were named
after the period during which they debuted, culminated the history of the
censer art. As a tasteful art enthusiast, Emperor Xuanzong of Ming was
extremely keen on censers. In order to raise the quality of wine and ritual
vessels displayed in the royal palaces, he ordered the imperial artisans and
the Vice-Minister of Public Works to manufacture a new series of censers using
the special wind-distilled bronze given as a tribute by Siam (today's
Thailand), which was to be mixed with over 30 precious materials including
gold, silver, tin and precious stones. They were also asked to model on the
forms of the censers recorded in the Xuanhe Bogutu the Kaogutu as well as the
exquisite porcelain ware produced from famous Song kilns in the imperial
collection.
