Antique Chinese Carved Gilt & Lacquered Wood Temple Statue Figure Emperor Guandi:
Antique Chinese Carved Wooden Temple Figure 19th C
Carved wood temple figure of Guandi
QING DYNASTY, 19TH CENTURY, with parcel gilt and lacquered carved wood, The seated deity wearing Ming-style official's robes depicting nicely detailed writhing dragons enclosing a front facing ferocious dragon on the chest beneath a reddish colored serene face traditionally arranged on a similarly red lacquered yoke back armchair with roaring qi-head carved hand rests and raised on a conforming rectangular plinth. This slightly intimidating figure captures the character of Guandi found in the classic Chinese writing of the 14th century title "Romance of the Three Kingdoms." The religious importance of Guandi is significantly enhanced by the opening of the lower backside where small gifts or scriptures could be placed.
The wooden carving being offered is in original condition without repair. There are some losses and damage as are common to these early carved figures. Please revise the images, as there are fine age lines on the face and on the chest. The condition is however original and the ageing simply adds to the character of this very fine and large example.
