Large Size 12\" Across, Superb Museum Quality Carving
Absolutely stunningantique Chinesecinnabar lacquer presentation box with sublime hand carved decoration. Rich, red cinnabar lacquer has beenmasterfully carved deeply into the surface of this museum quality container. The cover features highly detailed peonies set within a rocky landscape against an intricate and minutely carved geometric ground.The rounded sides of the box and cover encircled withdeeply cutscrollwork and undulating vines. The interior and underside lacquered in black. We have never offered an example of cinnabar lacquer as finely carved as the one. The entirety is artistically rendered in superb minute detail, incorporating thousands of handcarved strokes. Of significant size, measuring approximately 12 inches across and 5 inches tall, makes quite a statement from all the way across the room. The closer one gets, the more magnificent thecontainer becomes. When viewed under magnification, the many layers of hand applied cinnabar lacquer are seen in the leaves and petals, visible where the carving was carefully cut through the numerous layers.
New to market andjust acquired from the estate of a prominent Seattle professor\'s family who traveled extensively and collected antiques during the early to mid 1900s. Their collection of Asian and Mid Eastern antiques and fine art was superb. With a discerningeye,only the finest examples graced their home. This exquisite piece dates to the early 1900s and was one of their most prized. Displaysa most tasteful presence that is magnificent and bold,yet elegant. VIEW OUR OTHER ANTIQUE TREASURES & OFFERINGS a long process went into creating fine lacquer examples such as this one. Many layers ofcinnabar lacquer were applied, each requiring time to dry slowly before the next was brushed on. After many months, the design would have been painstakingly carved into the surface of the piece. On a large example with the minute detail presented here, a year or more of craftsmanship would have been neededto complete by a master artisan.The intricacy is exquisite. Absolutely gorgeous antique example of the strength and sublime presence of Chinese lacquer ware.
