The snuff bottle has a well-carved rounded form with an overall basketweave pattern on the body that is bordered by carved roping at the foot and shoulder. The stone is a creamy white nephrite jade with flecks of brown mottling. The snuff bottle is in very good condition and has a well-hollowed interior with remnants of snuff Tobacco. The top of the snuff bottle is an included amethyst cabochon, bound in brass, and with a long spoon. The snuff bottle measures 3.125 inches tall including the top and is 2.125 inches wide.
A similar snuff bottle sold in Christie's New York rooms, Sale 2801, Lot 1110 this year for $20,000. The carving and style of this bottle has characteristics of the official school of carving, and is very similar to bottles that were produced in the Imperial workshops during the late Qing Dynasty for wealthy Chinese literati and for export to Europe. The snuff bottle is unmarked, so please assume it is 20th century.
