AN EARLYWILLIAM IV, EXTREMELY THICK & HEAVY, HAND WROUGHT, ARMORIAL / CRESTED,STERLING SILVER FOOTED SALVER TRAYby ROBERT GAINSFORD, SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND, c1827-1828.

The shaped circular trivet with scroll, shell, foliate and intricately detailed fruit borders, and shield crest to center, raised on three equally thick & heavy lion paw feet.

Marked Appropriately: Lion Passant (Assay), Sheffield Crown Mark, (Town Mark), RG (Maker Intials), Bust, William IV (Duty Mark), 9-1/2 inches diameter x 1-1/4 inches high x (25 cm x 3.2 cm)

Extreme weight for size at 19.3 standard ounces! Approx. double what is usual!

As previously indicated, a centrally located, partitioned shield form crest displaying saw tooth and star design surmounted by a fierce boar and collared dog. The design further embellished by an impressive, intricately detailed banner inscribed in latin: TOUJOURS FIDELLE (alt. sp. TOUJOURS FIDELE). Translated as: 'ALWAYS FAITHFUL'

SELLER NOTE: This is the heaviest sterling silver salver we've ever run across (for the size). It was obviously made with a "money being no object" order. I'm tempted to research the crest to find out the importance of the family & their apparent wealth. This piece is in great condition, especially considering the age. Undoubtedly, in part due to the heft we speak of. It was well cared for.We are listing many pieces from this same estate in the next couple weeks. To include similarly fine continental hollowware & flatware pieces. A massive 45 ounces English teapot, a huge collection of silverware... to include some of the wildest figural silver we've ever seen. Be sure to check back...
