Antique Georgian Layette Pin Cushion - Baby Birth Sampler Phelan 1816 - Irish ? For Sale
A wonderful though fragile Georgian dated layette pin cushion, possibly Irish, made to welcome a new baby boy. On this example the pins are arranged in the form of a sampler with the name of the child, C T M Phelan born June 23rd 1816. There are also the initials E M, possibly the mother or grandmother who made the cushion, and small motifs including a ship, all drawn in pins. Like a sampler it also has a sentimental verse:
thy Father's Pride
thy Mother's joy
Welcome thou dear
thou Darling boy.
The pincushion is in very worn, distressed condition with much of the fine silk cover lost (see photos), but most of the pins remain forming the words, and none are replacements.
It measures 5 by 5 by 1.5 inches (13 by 13 by 4 cm.)
