ANTIQUE GEORGIAN NAPOLEONIC POW PRISONER SCRIMSHAW COW BONE SEWING TOOL BODKIN
I will be selling a very large number of interesting antiques including Tribal art, Chinese, Japanese, and European antiques. I will possibly be selling over two days so please check again on FRIDAY as there may be more pieces for sale. PLEASE NOTE: This sale is in GB Pounds Sterling.
This is a good early 19th Century Napoleonic prisoner of war carved cow or mutton bone sewing tool or bodkin ( please note: Not from an endangered species). It would have been made by prisoners for sale at market and was most likely crafted from old soup bones. The finial is carved in the form of a clenched fist, a very popular folk art motif from the period and throughout the 19th Century and the length of the tool is carved with various designs and inlaid with red and black wax. This is one of several pieces of POW work I am selling this week so please view my other sales.
Please read down the entire listing for Dimensions, Condition, Postage & Payment Details - most of the information you will need is here on this page but please get in touch if you don't find what you are looking for. Condition & Dimensions Good overall condition. Some old wear to the hand end.
It is about 4.1" / 10.5cms long.

Postage & Packing For your peace of mind and mine items will be sent fully insured. I will be posting from WEDNESDAY 29TH MAY so please make payment as early as possible. PLEASE be a little patient with the post - I will get them posted asap but I work on my own, often have a fair amount to post and I do pack carefully. I also post in the order that things are paid for.
Any delays by the postal services either at my end or abroad are rarely my fault. I always post out at the latest 3 working days after receiving cleared payment but sometimes an item is slowed up by a backlog of post or delayed whilst being processed through customs. To give you an idea it generally takes about 3-7 working days within Europe and 9 - 14 working days to the U.S. / rest of the world. If speed is of the essence then I can use a courier (DHL / FEDEX etc.) but prices for couriers start at around £30 / £40GBP for the very smallest object and VERY quickly escalate depending on size, weight and destination. Please note also that there has been a considerable hike in postage prices by the Royal Mail this year. I add on very little, often not enough to cover the packaging materials, so the price I quote really is as fair as possible.
UK: 1st Class Recorded Delivery (insured to £50 only): £5.10 GBP.
UK: Special Delivery: £7.22 GBP.
Europe: £9.30. Royal Mail Signed For Airmail. This figure does not include £2.60 for insurance over £50 GBP. This is a signed for service which offers full or limited tracking (depending on your country).
U.S. and Rest Of World: £9.80 GBP. Royal Mail Signed For Airmail. This figure does not include £2.60 for insurance over £50 GBP. This is a signed for service which offers full or limited tracking (depending on your country) and insurance. Please do not ask me to falsify customs documents, thank you.***Any import duties or taxes applicable are payable by the Buyer. Please enquire with postage queries, requirements or any other questions you may have prior to offerding.*** Where possible I will of course combine shipping for multiple purchases (however if, for example, you win a walking stick and a box of some description this wouldn't be very practical!).
Payment Details (Important: Please Read)
Rest Of The World: PayPal only.
In the event of a recorded/traceable and insured item going missing in the post I will do everything in my power (provide proof of postage and evidence of value, etc.) to assist in obtaining a full refund from the postal service involved.
