Antique Georgian Snuff Box Made From Sir William Wallace Oak Circa 1780 For Sale
An interesting and unusual Georgian snuff box, made from oak with a fine inlay, inscribed in ink on the inside with the words:
This Box was made out of Sir W. Wallace's Oak.
Sir William Wallace was a 13th century Scottish landowner and a leader in the Scottish Wars of Independence. The famous Wallace Oak, at Elderslie in Renfrewshire, was reputed to have afforded him shelter during a storm. The oak was described as still existing in the 1700s when it was reputed to have a huge circumference. Sir Walter Scott and other writers reported that no trace of it remained above ground by the end of the 18th century, pieces of the wood having been taken by souvenir hunters.
The box is in good condition with no damage, with just a little age wear to the surface, and the lid fits snugly. It measures just over 2.5 inches across and 1 inch high (6 by 2.5 cm.)
