EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE, ORIGINAL BOTANICAL FOLIO AND HERBARIUM OF PLANT AND FLOWER SPECIMENS FROM PALESTINE, GREECE, ITALY, GERMANY, ETC. 1873. This gorgeous herbarium has mounted specimens on 58 pages [often with 2-3 specimens on a page] with handwritten notations pertaining to the flower/plant and the area or country where these specimens were gatheredduring the winter and summer of1873. These rare, dried and mounted pressed flowers and plants, are all over 100 years old and they are still as beautiful and as colorful as the day they were lovingly placed in this album. They were collected from Italy, Pompeii, Dresden, Germany, Greece, Athens,Palestine, Banks Of Jordan, The Holy Lands, etc. and lovingly placed in this very rare album that can never be duplicated. A rare nineteenth centurybotanical collectionin an album that is avery worthy acquisition indeed.The handwrittennotations at the bottom of the pages refer to the country and area where these flowers/plants were collected starting in January of 1873 in Naples, Italy; Sorrento; Pompeii; Forum Rome; Baths of Caracalla; Baths of Titus; Arch of Drusus; Sardinian Villa; Tivoli; Albano; Borghese; Rome; Church La Bacilli; St. Paul; Pisa; Florence; Boboli; Lucca-Italy; Dresden; Pottsdam; Inttinsberg; Goethe's Garden; Heidelberg Castle; Versailles; Boris de Boulogne. While in Florence, Italy there are flowers/plants identified as beingfrom several artist studios, and each one is numbered as to the name of the artist studio from where they were gathered. Then on to"Carnival - Rome, Feb 24, 1873" and the last mounted plant is from Florence in the "winter" section of this exceedingly rare collection. The uniquealbum presents itself as an unusual and rare travelogue of flowers and plants, and is amazing in its detail.Then inthe summer of 1873 numerous additional specimens were collected from; Oxford, Addison's Stalk, August 18, 1873; From the Wall of Shakespeare's Home, Stratford On Avon, August 16, 1873; From the Old Mill from which Shakespeare Drank, August 16, 1873. Then on to the Holy Lands; Plain of Sharon; Agalon; Mt of Olives; Bethany; Garden of Gethsemane; Mosque of Omar; Joppa, House of Simon The Tanner; Mar Saba; Fonds from The Bank Of The Jordan; Bethel; Fountain of Gideon; Capernaum [located on the Northern Shore of Galilee; From the Sea of Galilee; Nazareth; Head Waters of The Jordan; Damascus; Baalbek; Tomb of St. Luke Ephesus; Royal Gardens Athens; Burial Place Athens; Acropolis; Grotto of Pan; Cave of Sybil; Temple of Mercury; etc. This collection, and the specimens are absolutely exquisite.Condition: Hardbound album is in very good condition and has the word "Flowers" in gilt on the front cover. The majority of these botanical specimens are in surprisingly verygood condition considering they are all over 100 years old and were gathered from the other side of the globe and carried home to America. As with all survivingherbariums several of the plants are a bit broken, however, the majority of the rare specimens in the 58 page horticultural collection are in very good condition and are a delight to behold. Measures approx. 7 1/2" x 10", spine is faded and there are a couple of stains on the front cover; rare collection remains in very good condition.
