Description:Great Late 18th, Early 19th Century Colonial Era Skewer Holder Set - Punched Heart Shape Complete with Four Skewers

Dating from the late 18th, early 19th century, the set is all hand forged, blacksmith made by a talented early artisan who transformed a hearth item into a true work of art.

Recenty purchased out of a Private Mass. collection, this piece is one of the finest examples we\'ve ever offered.

As you can see the smith worked the design of the holder to have shape of a heart. This may indicate the piece was commisioned for a wedding or anniversay gift, or just a design of whimsy.

The holder is complete with a set of four skewers.

Skewers sets such as this were commonly kept at the wooden mantle of an open hearth fireplace, the hung skewers of various lengths would have assisted with broiling various items of small meats, breads etc as well as holding together larger meats such as fowl and roasts that would have been placed on a revolving basting spit.

From age there is some slight pitting to the surface of the holder as would be expected from time, the skewers have more pitting and oxidation from being used in a hearth.

There is an area of negative space to the heart shape that is of original design. This is almost a \"flying bird\" shape; could very well denote a sacrement of sorts. Also note the punched in raised cicrular designs on the piece, another nice blacksmith touch.

Skewer holder itself measures 8\" x 7\" with the skewers ranging in size from 6\" to 8\".
Nice \"pig tail\" curls on the two larger skewers.

This wonderful set would be the perfect addition to an colonial themed country decorum, period hearth or iron collection.
