Antique Japanese100 Year Old 6 Drawer Tansu Personal Chest Solid Paulownia Wood:
Known as a Kirikodansu, this chest was made and used about100 years agoin the late Edo period (c. 1910).The kirikodansu, orsmall personal chest, was used to store an individual's kimono accessories as well as personal documents and valuables.
This tansu chest is made of solid kiri (paulownia) wood and hardened hinoki woodpeg construction (see picture 9). All the hardware is made ofhand forged copper. All six drawers moveeasily without binding. The lock seen in the last picture is no longer functioning and does not require a key.
This chest has a 100+ year old warm aged patina and remains infine restored condition. In some of the pictures (notably 5, 7, 8, & 12) restoration can be seen where areas have been filled to restore any loss (less than 1% overall). It measures20" wide by14" high by 10 3/4" deep (50x36 x27 cm). A great piece of Japanese history and avery interesting and functional piece of furniture.
