salesis very pleased to offer a Carved Yombe Statue. The statue depicts a nude maternity figure in the kneeling position with a child clinging to her back. The face has great depth of expression with the glaring eyes and filed teeth. The wood has developed a beautiful mahogany patina. The Yombe, or Mayombe as they are sometimes known, are a group of people from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They are well-known for the statues they produced, including maternity and fetish statues, and known examples often had sharp these just as the statue we are selling here. Similar pieces to this have been sold for many thousands of dollars at major sale houses in Paris and London. For example, in May 2012 Sotheby's sold a Yombe Maternity for over $68,000; in December 2007, Christie's fetched over 150,000 Euro for a Yombe Maternity; and in May, 2011, a Yombe Maternity achieved an astounding sale price in excess of $1.8 million dollars at Sotheby's in New York.
