A scarce example by William Ehrhardt (1831-1897) at Time Works, Barr Street, Hockley, Birmingham. The business was continued by his two sons William and Gustave
Ehrhardt were pioneers of machine-made watch production in England and suppliers of many Deck Watches to the Royal Navy. One of the most interesting English watchmakers of his time, Ehrhardt was a pioneer of advanced manufacturing techniques and holder of several UK Patents
William Ehrhardt was born in Germany in 1831, was apprenticed to a watchmaker there at the age of 15 and came to London for the Great Exhibition of 1851, then worked in London, Coventry and Birmingham. He eventually settled in Birmingham (England) and started as a watchmaker there in 1855
Over time he expanded the business and was instrumental in trying to modernise the English matchmaking methods. He had built and opened the 'Time Works', a substantial factory in Hockley, Birmingham (which is now known as 'The Jewellery Quarter). He opened his own factory in 1874 in Birmingham which made watchmaking machinery. He also started making watches and pocket chronometers for "The Admiralty". His son William took over the business after William senior died in 1897 and named it the British Watch Co in 1920
Brian Loomes mention in his book that "some watches were marked as made in London" (although they were actually made in Birmingham)
