Antique Staffordshire Flow Blue Transferware Plate Florentine Tj&j Mayer:
This large, 10 1/2 inch, plate of very
good quality. It was made in Staffordshire, England between 1843 and 1854 by
Thomas, John & Joseph Mayer. The condition is very good considering its
age. The plate has some small chips, one of about ¼” on the top face, a second
of about ¼” on the top rim, and one of about ½” on the back of the plate. This
last chip cannot be seen from the front of the plate. There is some
discoloration. The back of the plate is printed with the beautiful T. J. &
J. Mayer Rhone Scenery mark and an incised FB5, number that looks to be a 5. The design is one that is not often seen.
The plate was made by Thomas, John, and Joshua Mayer, who exhibited at the British Exhibitions of 1851, 1853 and 1855. They won a medal at the 1851 Exhibition.
