ANTIQUE STERLING SILVER 84 \"KOKOSHNIK\" RUSSIAN ORTHODOX ORNATE \"SKULL\" CROSS :
$59.00

Beautifully preserved, antique Russian Orthodox hand-carved, ornate silver Cross pendant inlaid with white enamel (partially preserved). Solid silver of the Imperial Russian origin, bears the \"84\" silver hallmark and the Imperial Russian \"Kokoshnik\" mark. An Orthodox cross pendant featuring simple design and rich symbolic meaning. The necklace loop is in great, nearly original shape. The cross is lightly scratched and worn out due to its age and wearing, and covered with light silver patina. The enamel is largely worn out. Authentic artifact from Europe. 100% sound and wearable. The obverse of the cross pendant bears a plain, Latin-stylecross, an image of the skull with crossbones, or Adam\'s head, and several inscriptions made with Cyrillic letters.
The top end of the vertical crossbar bears a two-letter abbreviated inscription in Cyrillic letters meaning \"KING OF GLORY\".The left and right side ends of the horizontal crossbar are ending with the two abbreviations forming the Sacred Name of Jesus Christ, as the \"IC XC\" Greek Christogram.
The bottom end of the vertical crossbar pendant bears animage of the skull below the image of the Cross referring to Golgotha (Calvary), the elevated site where Jesus was crucified, which the Bible says means \"the place of the skull\" in Hebrew. An ancient tradition of Catholic and Orthodox Churches held that it was also the burial place of Adam thus symbolizing the ultimate victory of Christ over sin and death.
The reverse of the cross pendant bears the \"84\" hallmark of Russian solid silver. The hallmark was the Imperial Russian standard for silver assay based on the ancient \"zolotnik\" unit. Next to the \"84\" hallmark, there is the \"Kokoshnik\" official assay mark of the Imperial Russia used on sterling silver artwork since the late 19th century. The mark appears as a tiny profile of a woman\'s head with a Russian head dress named \"kokoshnik\".
