It is absolutely extraordinary...a large sterling silverbrooch in the manner of a Russianor Cossack Sword or Dagger. It is extraordinaryin every way...from its size,to is workmanshipand detail, tothe lovely carved and pierced natural amethystsword handle with a very rare coin edge detail. The use of carved Chinese natural stones such as Amethyst and Jade, and coin edging is a halmark of early Lample pieces (Pre-Walburt, I believe). It is clearly marked "STERLING". Famed Jewelry Designer Walter Lampl was born in New Yori in 1895. He begainin the jewelry business in New York City in the early 1920s. His offices and showroom were located on New York’s 47th Street. SWORD BROOCH from the EARLY 1940s
In the early 1940s (about 70 years ago), Walter Lampl began to use the mark "WALBURT" which is named for his two sons, Walter and Burton. This pin is from that era...circa 1940s.
PIONEERED USE OF WOMEN AS JEWELRY DESIGNERSLampl’s jewelry was designed by women designers who produced drawings which were then approved by Walter. Two of these designers were Nat Block and June Redding.
LAMPL CHAMPIONED USE OF JADE "GREEN GEM of the EAST" in JEWELRY, 1927In 1927 Walter Lampl wrote magazine article in which he proposed changing the November birthstone from topaz to jade. In this article he talked about the rich history of Chinese jade...which he called the beautiful ‘Green Gem of the East.’ He particularly emphasized the use of genuine green jade of the type and color used in this remarkable, moveable sword or dagger brooch.
