Antique Victorian Silver Tennis Racquet / Racket Brooch - Hallmark B'ham 1886 For Sale
VICTORIAN SILVER TENNIS RACQUET BROOCH WITH PASTE STONE - BIRMINGHAM 1886Wonderful antique Victorian tennis racquet brooch. It carries a Birmingham hallmark for 1886 and dates from a time when the game of tennis was still in its infancy and the Wimbledon tournament barely ten years old.The brooch is unusual in having a lovely claw-set faceted clear paste stone (presumably representing the ball), plus applied silver decoration in the form of a rose stem. This gives the brooch sentimental as well as purely sporting significance. Perhaps it was originally a love token for a sweetheart who shared a passion for tennis? The detail is delightful and the brooch is in very good used condition with a nice patina. The maker's mark is a little faint in one part and is interrupted by a vent hole, but I'm sure someone will recognise it. On the back the T-bar hinge, pin and curly 'c' clasp are all working well. This would make a fabulous addition to an antique jewellery collection and is just waiting to be worn by a fan. It measures 54mm x 17mm (2 1/8" x over 5/8") approx.
