Antique W Feeley Art Nouveau Silver Carmelite Catholic Id Card Relic Holder Case For Sale
Up for sale is this awesome antiquesilver art nouveau Catholic identification card case.
This card holder has many wonderful features.
First, it was made in Providence R.I. by W.J. Feeley Company, who were well knownEcclesiastical Jewelers and Silversmiths of the late 19th and early 20th Century.W.J. Feeley Company was only in business between the years of 1875 and 1920, so this case has some nice age to it.
This silver case (possibly sterling although unmarked) is a beautiful example of the exquisite designs and detailed craftsmanship that came out of the Art Nouveau Era.
Please take a close look at my photos because it is truly magnificent!
The inside of the cardcase, (on one side) is also extremely interesting and extremely detailed. It features a beautifullyraised arched window with a center crossthat is surrounded by altar candlesticks and intricate scrolled designs. Also, on the lower portion, is a small circular door that features Mary and child and around it reads, Regina Décor Carmeli which is the Carmelite title for Mary. (Regina Decor Carmeli is also a meditation. A Sacred scripture that celebrated the beauty of Carmel where the prophet Elijah defended the purity of Israel's faith in the living God). The door opens and closes easily to reveal a shallow well which was probably meant to house a relic or some sort of sacrament.
On the opposite side of the case is a metal frame (it swings open and snaps shut) thatholds a card with the case owner's name and personal information, it reads, "Catholic Identification""Call nearest Catholic Priest at once in case of serious illness or accident to me. If no Priest canbeprocured read Instructions inside."
Inside refers to the little six page booklet that the card is printed on. Within the booklet are explicit instructions on "How to Assist the Dying" including prayers for the Catholic and Non-Catholic. Alsohidden behind this frame is a red Sacred Heart of Jesus Felt Scapular.
What a wonderful piece of old Catholic, Art Nouveau, and silversmith history!
Case measures 3" long by 2" wide and is approximately 1/8" thick.
It is in terrific antique condition and aside from some normal wear, (little scratches and rubs) to the inside dark metal, really shows little age. Someone obviously loved and cared for this case.
Please see photos.
Case is marked, W.J. Feeley Co.
