Antique Yomud-group Turkoman Torba With Backing. Rare Design. A++ Natural Dyes. For Sale
STARTS AT JUST $99& LISTED WITH PRICE! ANTIQUEYOMUD GROUP TURKOMAN TORBA, Central Asian tribal, Turkmenistan, lastthirdof the 19th century, and coming infairly goodoverall condition for the collector. The exact size is:1'-2" x 3'-2" (35 x 96 cm).An unusal ivory field torba with an allover lattice grid of "erre-gul" varients. It is symmetrically knotted with natural brown wool for the warps and wefts. This specimen has especially beautiful natural, plant-derived, dyes. It comes complete with its original ivory wool plain-weave backing. Thepile on the front of the bagis in good condition, evenly low without worn areas (see photo 11), but the bag has gouges on the top left and right corners, a small hole in the bottom elem panel, a pulled together slit on the left side, and a repaired area at the top border (see photos 5, 6, 7, and 9). These imperfections are from past ethnogriphic tribal use in the past. There is a slight smudge of color picked up from another rug at one point in time that should come out with a cleaning (see photo 8). This rather rare specimen of its type has an old weave feel to it on the reverse and the rich colorsare fabulous!I only found two othersimilarly designed examples of Yomud torbas having this field design in the antique rug book literature. Refer to: (1) Uwe Jourdan, Oriental Rugs Volume 5 - Turkoman", 1989, plate 170, page 208, dated late 19th century, and (2) a mid-19th century specimen published by Udo Langauer in "Turkmen Collection 2011" , page 109.If you have any questionsconcerning this very pretty antique Yomud family torba, email Michael Phillips (READ: phillipsrugs at comcast dot net), or feel to call my studio: (303) 885-7599.
