This isaGORGEOUS vintage sterling silver necklace and screwback earring setthat washand wrought inTaxco, Mexico,circa 1940's to 1950's, by a well documented silver artist who signed their pieces "AAR".This mark has been attributed to ANTONIO REINA who worked for Margot van Voorhies at MARGOT DE TAXCO (see page 168 in MEXICAN SILVER by Penny Morrill and Carole Berk). Reina often made jewelry in designs that were originated by Margot de Taxco or Los Castillo. Thisdemi-parure is masterfully crafted in an artistic, sculpturalmotif thathas a great artnouveau look!The necklace consists of silver repousse links that have demi spheres that are framed with silver swirls and scroll flourishes. Repoussage is a metal working technique where malleable metal (such as sterling silver) is shaped or ornamented by hammering from the back or underside. This technique is extremely time consuming and can take an artist an entire day or several days to complete just one piece. The links are connected at the top with soldered silver jump rings which allows the necklace to lay gracefully and beautifully when worn. The clasp is a simple hook closure that is seen on much of the early Mexican jewelry. The screwback earrings are made just like the links in the necklace and the screwback findings work as they should. The silver has acquired a beautiful soft patina that reflects the shadows created by the designs.This magnificentset is extremely well made in aunique, feminine designthat is sure to be noticed and admired ~ it would be a grand asset to any vintage Taxco silver jewelry collection!
SIZE: Necklace: Inside circumference when closed is 15-1/2" and I'm including two silver 3" extenders (one is worn over the hook portion of the clasp and the other on the opposite portion of the clasp) which are worn in the back where they don't show (unless you have extremely short hair!) and extends the wearable length to 18-1/2", width is 5/8", and weight is41.6 grams. Screwback earrings: Length is 1", width is 5/8", and weight is 5.7 grams. Total weight of set is 47.3 grams.
CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition ~ no dings or dents to the silver ~ minor surface scratches consistent with loving wear and age (and actually desirable on vintage pieces) ~ just about PERFECT used condition!
HALLMARKS: "HECHO EN MEXICO, AAR, 925, STERLING, TAXCO". Artist "AAR"is shown on page 225 in Bille Hougart's highly respected source book, The Little Book of Silver Trade and Hallmarks (2006 edition).
