A UNIQUE, FINE QUALITY ART DECO 8 DAY PROPELLER CLOCK C1932-35
This sale is to purchase a completely unique 8 day alarm clock which has been made from a used shortened airplane propeller. This item is accurately dated to between 1932 -1935 and is a period Art Deco style design.
About the case
The clock case is formed from a shortened airplane propeller and the clock mechanism is fitted to the locating orifice used to secure the propeller to the front engine mounting flange. To the front the polished wood is inset with flush fitting recessed brass bolt heads, which originally would have had securing nuts to the rear. It is possible to view the interior securing dowels and hand cut internal flange. The top of the propeller, which is finished with the original black stain or paint, is inscribed and stamped to the topside: GENET MAJOR. The topside also carries data concerning the number of cylinders and displacement data.
The underside of the propeller is finished in the same coating as the top and is inscribed with14/09/1932 and possibly the engine number? The underside has 4 threaded brass feet, formed from the rear portions of the brass headed bolts of the front face. The pitch of the feet allows the case to be shown at an angle. The rear of the casing is finished in the black finish and plain polished wood. The sides of the case show the original graining of the wood. The measurements are: width 10.5'' Height 9''(including feet)Depth 5''
About the cases history
The clock case which is made of either Rosewood or Coramander wood is taken from a September 1932 airplane engine, THE GENET MAJOR manufactured, by the English company Armstrong Siddely during the 1930’s. The engine was originally a 5 cylinder design, named the Genet, but was enlarged for R.A.F service to 7 cylinders and produced 140 h.p. All of the company’s engines were named after big cats. The R.A.F specific engine was named the CIVET 1.
This particular propeller is from a civilian aircraft, possibly an AVRO 631 Cadet, a popular trainer, of which 35 were built?
The case is presented in unrestored condition 1 and has no damage or splits, save the original chips etc. which would have been sustained during service. Due to its age it has a stunning original patina and rich colour, enhanced by years of polishing. All of the original carved or stamped data is clearly visible.
The clock movement
The 8 day alarm clock movement is of a superb quality French Manufacture, and is probably of an earlier date than the case and was retailed by J.W. Benson of Ludgate Hill, London. The movement and case are in solid brass, with steel fittings and is supplied with the original brass key. The dial which is in wonderful unmarked condition has an alarm sub dial. The original beveled crystal is unmarked as is the visible polished surround. The clock needs to be removed from the case to enable winding and adjustment. The clock was serviced in winter 2011 and keeps excellent time. It is in outstanding condition. The movement measures 3.5'' in circumference and 3'' in depth.
