Ronson Art Deco Lighter

This outstanding Art Deco period cigarette box/lighter combination was made by Ronson in the late 1930’s and is marked “Ronson Touch-Tip, Art Metal Works Inc. Newark NJ, USA”. The lighter is a touch-tip type and the case has a roll-top sliding top lid plus a lower drawer. Each of the two compartments has 15 curved slots to hold the smokes. The sleek design of this piece features a dark enamel case with a so-called “Dureum” brass finish to the lighter, drawers, roll-top lid and feet. The enamel appears black at first glance, but it is actually a very dark mottled brown. The case measures 7 7/8” (20 cm) wide, measured foot to foot. It is 6” (15 cm) deep front to back, not counting the drawer handle. The box stands 3 ¼” (8.5 cm) tall at the wand.

Condition: This vintage piece is in very good condition overall. The lid slides well, and the inner compartments are extremely clean with only minor spotting on the dureum finish. The roll-top lid will open all the way (I noticed in my photos it is only pictured partially open). The front drawer handle has very minor corrosion spots and some wear and scuffs. The roll-top lid has small scratches and scuffs, as well as a few tiny corrosion spots. There are a few tiny nicks in the enamel on the case here and there. The deep brown enamel has minor scratches from normal use. Two of the feet have lost their original felt pads.

It is important to note that I am unable to get the lighter to light the wand. When you push down on the ignition button both the gear and the friction wheel engage and move. I replaced the flint and still am unable to get it to spark to the wand. The ignition button has good resistance and pops back up into place without issue.
