"Won't you stop and see our friendly and disreputable collies ..."?

Original 1923 letter and photo postcard signed and inscribed by Albert Payson Terhune, American author and dog breeder. With brief, but superb content related to collies and to "Treve," the nickname of Terhune's beloved champion collie Sunnybank Sigurd. Complete with the original mailing envelope from his estate and kennels at Sunnybank.

The one-page typed letter is on Terhune's personal letterhead and was written in reply to a "Mrs. Woodruff" (actually Miss Woodruff, a young schoolteacher from NY state.) Terhune responds warmly and thanks her for praising his "dog yarns." He encourages her to name her own collie after Treve and hopes he will be a "true pal" and make up for her years of "enforced dog-lessness." Terhune closes with an cheery invitation to "stop and see our friendly and disreputable collies." Boldly signed by Terhune in black ink. The postcard enclosed with the letter is inscribed by Terhune in ink: To Hilda Elizabeth Woodruff / with every best wish, from / Treve's Master.

Letter measures 7.25 by 10.5 inches and has two folds from mailing. Postcard is 3.5 by 5.5 inches. Nice condition, as shown, with typical age-toning but no tears or other flaws. Envelope was carefully opened by Miss Woodruff nearly 90 years ago and is completely intact. An outstanding group of items for the Terhune collector or any dog lover. Low opening offer and . Authenticity guaranteed.

Note: Terhune's book Treve was published in 1924, but Miss Woodruff undoubtedly knew of Treve and was inspired to get a collie from magazine articles Terhune published earlier. Treve (as in retrieve) was described by Terhune as "the livest dog I have known." He was a great champion but, sadly, had a relatively short life and died from a heart condition in 1924.
