Amazing Antique French Petitcollin Celluloid Doll Black African Baby Grass Skirt For Sale
Fantastic Antique French Petitcollin Celluloid Black African Baby w Grass Skirt
On July 8 we attended the Estate Sale of Mary O Zeasman of Madison Wisconsin, who was a prominent collector and world traveler. Mary collected dolls, art, and was an accomplished seamstress. This is one of the items acquired at that estate sale.
An amazing example of celluloid dollmaking by world famous Petitcollin, France. 15 inches overall, in black celluloid, an African baby with colorful fiber loin covering. He is a special boy.
Beautifully detailed hair and body molded in celluloid.
We cannot determine the nature of the eyes, but they are inset, not celluloid, but appear to be glass or painted tin possibly, and are covered with a layer of clearcoat, we assume a varnish, which makes it difficult to image the eye surface. They are a pretty light brown, set, of unknown material.
The doll is joined with spring joints of some kind, imaged in last image. I don't want to pull them apart to understand them completely, but one can wiggle the joints and hear the springs squeak. Head turns on springed neck joint.
Beautiful detail seen on fingers and toes, of nails and knuckle ridges.
The facial expression is one of an alert baby seeing something new, in my opinion. Very realistic. Body is a pretty dark chocolate brown. Hair seems to be painted black, airbrushed. Lips are painted red.
Loin covering is a grass like fiber in great condition.
We can't find very much NOT to like about this great Petitcollin piece in fact it is an amazing doll.
He has the French Petitcollin mark of the Eagle Head on his back and the word France.
The manufacture of toys in celluloid started in 1906 with this well known French Company, the production of dolls well underway by 1912.
Exact vintage of this doll unknown but before 1960 when production in celluloid ended. We suspect pre WWII but it is just a guess.
Net Weight: 6 oz 15 inch doll. Very pose-able.
