Amazing 1863 Personal/Bitter Letter RE Abe & Mrs Lincoln Gift--Family-War-Land +
Stunning and fascinating letter from the early 1860's (1861-1864) containing some amazing period content.
Starts off as bitter & resentment toward someone giving Mrs Lincoln a $2,500 shawl. Then goes into how the writer could better use the money while outlining each of her family members and some wonderful land available for purchase.
Additional research on this family could be easy based on the level of some of the details she provides.
HERE IS A TRANSCRIPTION OF THE LETTER (as best as possible with spelling, grammar and punctuation intact):
Middleport March 9th 1863(?)
Mr Stuart Sir sead(?) in the paper that you gave Mrs Lincoln a lace shawl worth twenty five hundred dollars now if that is true I think you must have plenty of money. Now Mrs Lincoln has welth and friends. Her husband is getting twenty five thousand dollars a year I do not think it any to much if he does his duty as he should. My husband gets three shillings a cord for chopping wood do his best he can make but from four to six shilling a day and board himself. Now if you would give me as much as that shawl cost I will tell you what I would do with it. Those boys in the town of Barre Orleans(?) Coutny twenty five acres of land about half way between Albion and Medina. The buildings are most new and there is seventy five apple trees and quite a good many peach trees and a good proportion of small fruit it is a choice piece of land. His price is fifteen hundred dollars I think he bought for less. Now for the rest I have five children my oldest daughter does not like to go to school as well as the rest but she has got a passable education my next is a son he is in Third N.Y. Vol Calvary Co F before he enlisted he was in a store in Albion business got so dull he thought he would go to war. My two other daughter the oldest of the two wants to get an education she has got a very good start she has never been to any other school except one term at G.H. Sat Lima(?) and one of the Professors said that in a year and a half she could fit herself for college. The youngest Alice has got a very good voice. I think if she had a good advance(?) she would make a very good singer she is ten years old my youngist is a son five year old. This is what I want the money for I think it would do me more good than Mrs Lincoln shawl will her.
