This is a nicely carved powder horn inscribed \"John Dawes his horn - Sept 1784\". It is in pieces. There is no plug on the small end. There is a missing brass or copper band on the wooden end plug. The nails holding the plug in place are gone. I believe someone may have cut this down at some point. The plug looks like it was refitted. There are breaks in the metal bands, both at the tip and on the plug. 2 small rusted areas that look to be nail holes near the smaller end. There is a carved hole under the smaller band. There is some wear on the carving of the eagle who is carrying a Flag. Other flaws due to age.
There is no provenance with this horn. I did find a listing for a John Dawes as a Revolutionary war soldier who was buried in Savoy, MA.
There are many carvings on the horn. There is a map of the French and Indian Trail with forts along the Allegheny River, an eagle carrying a Flag and banner that reads \"Live and Let Live\", a lion with an eagle in his hair with a poem underneath. \"Ye old British Lion Was Strong And Fair Till The Yankee Eagle Got In His Hair\", a boat in Lake Erie, and a map going down the horn. I believe it is the Ohio/Pennsylvania area.
The horn measures approximately 11\" long. Found in a trunk in my grandfather\'s basement in Massachusetts. Please ask questions and I will try to answer a best I can. Please look closely at the photos as there is no return on this.
