An Unusual Antique Compass, Mirror And Fold Out Binocular Lenses Gadget For Sale
An interesting little gadget, dating from the early twentieth century and made from cream colured celluloid and metal.
The object consists of a compass, with a mirror on the reverse (probably for signalling), and a set of fold-out eyepieces and lenses, which together form skeleton short range binoculars, as well as acting as magnifing glasses etc. The items had quite a range of uses. The barrel of the piece it slightly adjustable with a pull-out section for focussing the binocular lenses. The compassis in working order, although, due to age, it needs to be held very level and sometimes given a light tap to point the way (almost) correctly. It may not be totally accurate, again due to age, but is nearly so.The mirror has some light age wear. All the lenses seem to be free from noticeable scratches but are a little dirty. There is also some slight shrinkage of the celluloid frame away from the metal compass at the edges (I suspect it was used outsideon a hot day and this shrinkage occured due to the metal getting hot) - the item still functions as intended, but has been priced accordingly.
The piece is a real "steampunk" style gadget and looks great displayed.Length (in the "folded" position) is 3.2 inches (8.2 cm), diameter of compass is 1.6 inches (3.7 cm).
A NOTE REGARDING POSTAGE: Postage is calculated by weight and size of the packed item. Royal Mail are still the best value option in most cases for smaller items. Please read the information below regarding postage for a better understanding of how we estimate postage rates.
We often photograph our items in an appropriate setting to give more of an idea of how they might look when displayed. The actual item for sale will be the main item in the photograph and, unless otherwise stated, the sale is for the item described only (i.e. not inclusive of any other items used in the pictures).
PAYMENT: Paypal for overseas buyers please. UK buyers also may use a cheque drawn on a UK bank or send a postal order. Please send payment within seven days of sale or listing end, or if you are likely to be away etc. please contact me to let me know. PLEASE NOTE: Due to an increase in unpaid items, an unpaid item case will be opened if payment is not received, or contact made, within a maximum of two weeks from date of purchase.
POSTAGE: Our postage charges are estimated to the best of our ability before the item is packed for shipping, based on actual Royal Mail price charts. Therefore, if the actual shipping charge should prove to be significantly less, we will refund the difference in postage back to you via Paypal. We always use Signed For or Insured services (unless you choose otherwise on smaller value items). Although these do cost a little more, they offer better service and protection for items, so are worth the extra cost in case of any problems.
I will combine postage for multiple items, provided they can be safely packed together.
The Worldwide postage quoted applies to most destinations, however, European countries are often cheaper, so please ask for the postage cost to your European destination if you want further clarification.
NON UK buyers: In theory we are happy to ship most items overseas, but those which are large and/or heavy can be very expensive via UK shipping channels. If you wish to offer from overseas and do not see a postage price for your destination in the listing, please contact us and we will send a shipping estimate. Items are priced for postage by Volumetric Weight: height x width x length.
Please also note that your local customs office may levy an import duty, which you will need to pay to receive your item.
