This old, interesting antique 18th century violin

The violin bears the label of Giorgio Bairhoff, a fine Italian maker who studied with the Gagliano family.I doubt this violin was made by Giorgio Bairhoff but I have no clue who might have made it. However, it is probably as old as the label suggests. In addition to the label there is a repair inscription of Simoutre Freres, a very famous French luthier and violin maker in Mirecourt, dated 1862.There is also an ink stamp or brand in several places of Melvin Stone, NY. I have seen bridges by Melvin Stone as well as this same imprint in other quality violins. This old violin is a well-loved and often repaired survivor. There have been several old restorations to the top, but nothing in the sound post area. The varnish is original and well preserved, retaining areas of original gloss and luster. The violin has a later, modern neck and original grafted scroll. The instrument was expertly set up with new Thomastik Dominant strings. The bridge is new, of proper height, and well carved to fit the violin, and a new sound post has also been properly fitted as well as a new nut. The pegs are old ebony with gold inlay matching the tail piece, and are well-adjusted, turn easily and hold well. All other repairs and adjustments have been done and there are no open cracks. All the seams have been checked, re-glued as needed and there is nothing needed at this time. The violin is ready to play.
The tone of this violin is open, warm and resonant. It is a very responsive and has the willingness and power to really perform. This is a tone that is focused slightly to the darker side, but with tremendous flexibility and and a creamy, rounded, mature quality to the sound. It is well-focused with a solid core and a full, centered tone. The tone is what one would expect from a top tier, handmade, concert violin. It is an even and well-balanced sound, warm, sonorous and delightfully clean, pure and easily accessible. The violin has more than just a touch of brilliance and the ability to penetrate, but it is remarkable for its warmth and sweetness that is at the very core of the instrument. This is a violin that does everything well, from the lower positions right up the fingerboard. It is clear, clean, and very easy to play. For those who have played a fine antique concert violin, all the depth, richness and clear focus of this violin will not be a surprise. But for those who have not had the pleasure of playing a truly fine instrument, this violin will undoubtedly be a rare treat. It has a mellow singing voice, rich and full. This is a violin that is easy to listen to and an exciting experience to play. It is certainly one of the best I have had in a long time.
I have included many photos below detailing the features and character of this violin as best I could, but no matter how I tried, it is impossible to completely capture the elegance and style of this very individual violin. I am often asked what attributes differentiate a fine quality violin from the more common. Connoisseurs will often say that the answer lies not in the individual details but the general impression. The details then confirm the impression of the whole. Both the general impression and the details combine in this instance to leave an impression of individualistic, handmade
