Ancient Chinese Tang Dynasty Glazed Amber / Sancai Pottery Standing Horse - 618 :
$7300.00

A superb, unrestoredexample of an ancient Chinese amberglazed pottery horse, among the most iconic of all ancient Chinese ceramics, dating to the Tang Dynasty, 618 - 906 AD.

Standing on an integral base, the animal a vibrant picture of poised energy; standing with head slightly turned, pricked ears anddocked tail. Wearing a red saddle across the back with white skirt, the animal itself is covered in the rich caramel glaze for which Tang ceramics are so famous. The front of the face, mane and tail coloured in a lighter cream hue, a further dark drop of glaze hangs from the muzzle.

This beautiful piece has masterfully captured the restrained power and beauty of the horse, reflecting not only the physical body of the animal, but seeminglyits inner spirit. The head is particularly magnificent, with the bone structure of the horse cleanly indicated.

It was during the Tang dynasty that Chinese figural art reached its peak and ming qi became objects of high art in a way not replicated before or since. An empire built on trade between east and west along the famed Silk Route, the Tang artists were highly influenced by the vibrant and cosmopolitan world they inhabited; merchants of all ethnicities, grooms, camels and horses abound, all indicating a society framed by commerce and travel. Horses such as this, tall and muscular, are thought to have represented a new breed brought to China from the west. As such, they underline this great outward looking empire’s close trading links with central Asia and beyond.

This is a verywell preserved piece and is unlike the vast majority of Tang horses on the market which are plagued with heavy, deceptive restoration. It is also accompanied by an Oxford Authentication Thermoluminescence test certificate, which scientifically dates it to the Tang Dynasty.

Height: 12 1/4 inches.

Ex. US private collection, originally acquired in the 1970\'sbefore the heavily restored/forged items plagued the market in these objects.
