Ancient Chinese Tang Dynasty Terracotta Court Attendant Statue Figure For Sale
A charming and high quality example of an Ancient Chinese Tang dynasty terracotta figure of an official, dating to approximately 900 A.D.
The male figure is shown wearing long robe with thick over-cloak, open at the chest. He wears a conical cap on his head and bears a serene expression. The hands, held close to the chest, are perforated and would once have held a stick, perhaps a candle for lighting the dark tomb in ancient times.
The figure appears to be dressed in thick garments for a cold climate, perhaps indicating that he was a foreigner or from the borders of Imperial China.
Height of figure:7inches.
Condition:Excellent condition.Intact, unrestored. Traces of original pigments.
Provenance:
Acquired 1980's, London. The previous collector acquired a large group of similar figures, all in the 1980's from the London trade. This is one of the nicer examples from the group. Although this piece has not been Thermoluminescence (TL) tested, we haverandomlytested another figure from the same group via Oxford Authentication (world leaders in the field), which showed the piece to be authentic. A copy of the TL test for thisother statue may be provided upon request. All our objects are guaranteed to be ancient as described and buyers should be aware of the many fakes on the market.
