An exceptional, well provenanced, ancient Egyptianpolychrome sarcophagus section, dating to Egypt's Late Period,after 800 B.C.
An attractive and fascinating section of a Late Period sarcophagus. Constructed of cartonnage (ancient Egyptian plaster like material). The section likely from the lower body (legs).
Decorated in vibrant colours, oranges, greens, reds and blues, depicting a winged vulture with long red tongue protruding throughsharp teeth, surmounted by sun disk and standing on a raised plinth. Block designabove and below. A small section of hieroglyphs along the bottom edge. A figure ofSekhmet can be seen standing, just below thebottom most feather on the vulture's wing.
Sekhmet, literally meaning the (one who is) powerful,is here depicted in her usual form,a womanwiththe head of a lioness. Shewas considered the protector of the Pharaoh's, leading them and guarding them in battle.
Length of frame: 24 1/2 inches.
Condition: Excellent, some flaking as can be seen.
