This rare examplewas actually struck during Alexander's lifetime, circa 323 B.C. at theTarsos (modern day South central Turkey) mint.
The obverse depicts the portrait of the goddess of wisdom and warfare, Athena. She isshownfacing right with herhair flowing out from under aplumedCorinthian helmet, her lips slightly parted.
The reverse shows a standing figure of the goddess of Victory, Nike her beautiful wings spread wide, she holds a laurel wreath in her outstretched right hand and stylis (cross arm of a ship's mast) in her left. The legend in the left field reads:
Caduceus;Tarsos mint mark in left field.
This wonderfully tactile ancient gold coin was struck in the name of one of history's most exceptional and influential leaders, Alexander the Great. Alexander captured nearly all of the known world and with it, a fantastic amount of gold bullion from his adversaries, the Persians. He used this gold to mint his famous coinage. Their beauty, high purity, lustre and association with Alexander has lead these coins to be fought for, traded, collected and hoarded throughout antiquity and into the present day.
A charming and early example ofa fantastically desirable and important coin type from the rare Tarsos mint.
