A lovely example of the famous ancient Greek silver didrachm from Akragas, Sicily stuck circa 490 - 483 B.C.
The obverse (image ii) with sea eagle standing left. The legend reading:
The reverse (image i) with open clawed crab within shallow incuse circle.
The ancient city of Akragas was founded by colonists from Gela in around 580 B.C. and grew to become a wealthy and important ancient city. Akragas began to issue her iconic coinage a few decades later. The peoplechose the eagle, a symbol of the Father of the Gods, Zeus, to whom a large temple was dedicated in Akragas, as their obverse depiction. The reverse shows a freshwater crab, likely a popular delicacy harvested in the region.
