Ancient Greek Silver Akragas Sicily Didrachm Crab Coin - 495 Bc

A particularly charming example of an iconic coin type. An ancient Greek silver didrachm from Akragas, Sicily, stuck circa 495 - 480 B.C.

The obverse (image ii) with sea eagle standing left. The legend reading:

ΑΚΡΑ[CΑΝΤΟΣ]

"Of Akragas"

The ancient city of Akragas was founded by colonists from Gela in around 580 B.C. and grew to become a wealthy and important city throughout the 5th Century. Akragas began to issue her iconic coinage a few decades later and chose the eagle, a symbol of the Father of the Gods, Zeus, to whom a large temple was dedicated in Akragas, as their obverse depiction. The reverse shows a freshwater crab, likely a popular delicacy harvested in the region.
