Syracusan coinage of thistypeis perhaps the most beautiful, iconic, inlfuential and enduring of any coin type from any time. These wonderul examples of the die engravers art chart the evolution from the archaic rigidity of the early 5th Century to the free, unrestricted beauty of the Classical era, demonstrated on the coinage by master artists such as Kimon and Euainetos. These types went on to influence the coinage of many other important colonies and cities such as Rhodes, Carthage and Thessaly to name but three.
The obverse shows the water nymph, Arethusa the patron of Syracuse who was transformed into a fresh water spring emerging in the city. The dolphins swimming around her were a common sight off the Sicilian coast.
