Ancient Ionian / East Greek Archaic Vead Of A Votary - 750 B.c. For Sale
An extremely rareEast Greek/Ionian terracotta head of a male votary, dating to approximately 750 -650 BC.
The votary is shown in beautiful, abstract style,subtly carved yet with a powerful presence. The depiction is that of a male, shownwearing large crested cap or helmet. His large eyes are almond shapedhis features only faintly rendered. Fractured at the neck, perhaps ritually.
This sculpture would have been dedicated in ancient times in a Major Temple. When archaeologists talk of 'Votive' objects such as this, they refer to the ancient belief that one could win favor with the Gods by dedicating a physical object to them. An item such as this would have been commissioned by an ancient Greek and then dedicated to a God/Goddess, in exchange for a favor, granted or anticipated.
Unrestored. Mounted on a marble base. Very faint traces of red pigment on the helmet.
Height mounted:8 3/4inches.
Height of terracotta: 5 1/2 inches.
