Beautiful anthropomorphic bronze staff head or staff finial from the ancient Luristan culture of Western Persia (now Iran) - circa 1250 BC - 700 BC.
The piece was designed in the ancient "master of beasts" motif, a very stylized and abstracted depiction of a person or god holding two beasts by the throat.
This example is quite attractive in it's design and patination. It is displayed on a small wood stand, as pictured.
Good condition, as shown in the photos and with the following noted: Overall encrusted green, red and light-colored patina to the bronze surfaces. No losses or restoration.
This piece was purchased from an estate collection in the Point Reyes area of California several years ago. The collector obtained his collection in the late 1950s and the pieces in his collection were brought to the United States in the early 20th century.
Bronzes of Luristan, the accepted term for a distinct body of metalwork produced during the early Iron Age, ca. 1250 to 700 BCE, in the Luristan district of west-central Iran. They are characterized by a wide range of idiosyncratic forms and a highly stylized conception of human and animal representation. Thousands of these distinctive artifacts were looted from cemeteries in the 1920s and ended up in museums and private collections all over the world. Because nobody knows the specifics of where most were found, there is controversy over the exact dating of individual pieces and the meanings of the designs.
