A rare and fascinating ancient South-East Asian Khmer battle dagger or short sword, dating to the 11th - 14th Century (the Khmer Angkorian period).

This powerful weapon is of typical south-east Asian form, with cylindrical hilt, oval cross-bar and robust blade. The sharp cutting edges and point would have enabled the weapon to be used for both stabbing and slashing, in battle.

The Cambodian Khmer Empire was the dominant force in south-east Asia from the 9th-15th century, holding sway over large parts of modern-day Thailand, Vietnam and Laos. This fascinating dagger dates to the Angkorian phase, the so-called golden age of Khmer Civilization, during which the sprawling Angkor temple complex was built, including that famous architectural masterpiece and symbol of Khmer, Angkor Wat. This was a tumultuous period, with the Khmer rulers engaged in numerous battles, most notably against the Annamese, Chams and Thai, who would eventually capture the magnificent Angkor complex in 1434. A weapon such as this would have been used by a Khmer soldier and perhaps buried with him after death.

Length of weapon:18 3/4inches.

Condition:Very good. Pommel probably reattached, otherwise unrestored. One of the nicest examples we have seen.

Provenance:

Ex. British Private collection, Ex. London Art Market. Reputedly purchased in Bangkok, 1960's.
