Ancient Neo-babylonian Ring With Lion Crescent And Star Motifs 609-520 Bc For Sale
About The
Roman Jewelry
The Neo-Babylonian Empire or the Chaldean Empire was a period of
Mesopotamian history which began in 626 BC and ended in 539 BC. During the
preceding three centuries, Babylonia had been ruled by their fellow Akkadian
speakers and northern neighbours, Assyria. Throughout that time Babylonia
enjoyed a prominent status. The Assyrians had managed to maintain Babylonian
loyalty through the Neo-Assyrian period, whether through granting of increased
privileges, or militarily, but that finally changed in 627 BC with the death of
the last strong Assyrian ruler, Assurbanipal, and Babylonia rebelled under
Nabopolassar the Chaldean the following year. In alliance with the Medes, the
city of Nineveh was sacked in 612 BC, and the seat of empire was again
transferred to Babylonia. This period witnessed a great flourishing of
architectural projects, the arts and science.
About
This Ring
* Pink stamp is a clay impression of the seal when stamped today.
This very rare and symbolic ancient
Babylonian ring dates from 609-520 BC, with its ancient place of origin being
Judea, Israel. It bears a slim band which expands slightly at the shoulders.
Its bezel is very large and is oval in shape. Upon the surface of its bezel are
the deep and intricate carvings of a reclined lion (mouthed opened in a roar)
with a dotted, textured mane.
Above the lion are two symbols: a
crescent and a star. A dark natural patina is retained all over, as well as a
layer of earthen encrustations in areas on the ring especially at the back of
the bezel and within the band, testament to its authenticity and age.
Babylonian Lion
Symbol:
The Lion of Babylon is an ancient
Babylonian symbol. The Lion of Babylon symbolically represented the King of
Babylon. This time period was known as the (609-520 BC) Dynasty XI of Babylon,
or Chaldean Dynasty. A total of 9 kings would rule the Neo-Babylon Empire
during this time.
Babylonian Crescent
& Star Symbols:
Scholars maintain that the use of the
crescent and star symbols arose from Babylonian mythology in which the
juxtaposition of Sin (moon god, father of time) and Shamash (supreme ruling sun
god, judge of heaven and earth) was a metaphor for the cosmic powers given to
the Babylonian king to rule.
This solid ring boasts very crisp
details, is smooth all over and makes for a comfortably worn, exquisite
adornment today. The historical and symbolic qualities of this very rare ring
contribute to its high value and demand with antiquity collectors all around
the world.
