Height: 8.5" / Diameter: 5.5"
Fine and rare Seljuk period bronze jar, from Northern Persia, dating from circa 1000 AD - 1200 AD.
This piece is decorated with engraved floral and geometric designs and retains areas of the original silver inlay. It may have been used as a wine jar, oil jar, or some other storage purpose. The jar was made with an applied neck of bronze and a body of copper-bronze alloy. Seams can be seen around the edge of the shoulder as well.
The engraving is fine and with only light wear. The shoulder has two bands of flowers and leaves in a reserve with two stylized blossoms separating them. The neck of the jar has stylized leaf designs, stylized flower designs with silver inlay (fragmentary) and there are wave-like images around the rim.
The jar is in good excavated condition with the following noted: Soil encrustation on the body. A beautiful deep dark green to black patina overall. Surface wear and abrasions. Small dents. Possible old repairs. No holes, cracks, or losses (besides the silver inlay).
This piece was purchased from an old collection of antiquities in Northern California. Collected in the 1920s.
The Seljuks were nomads from Turkmenistan who entered the Abbasid empire around 950 AD and gradually converted to Sunni Islam. By 1030 they were obtaining power for themselves, and they soon conquered the Ghaznavids and controlled most of Persia. The arts thrived during the Seljuk period as the Turkic rulers patronized Persian culture, arts, and literature. In 1243 the Mongols took over both Persia and Anatolia (modern Turkey).
