A very rare, ancient Roman Terracotta brick, impressed with the mark of the First Italian Legion, dating to approximately 100 A.D.

The brick is of square form, the sides and backcut coarsely and the front smoothed off and impressed with legionary stamp.Bricks such as this were the primary method of construction of Rome's many frontier forts.Roman tile-makers very occasionallystampeda brickwith the insignia of the relevant legion, affirming its and the building's status as military property.This example contains the stamp of the First Italian Legion, and likely originates from the ancient Province of Moesia Inferior (modern-day Romania-Bulgaria), where the First Legion was stationed in the 1st-2nd Century A.D.

The First Legion was involved in the construction and fortification of Trajan's Bridge, an over 1 kilometer wide masterpiece of engineering, the completion of which was the prelude to the invasionand eventual subjugation ofDacia (modern-day Romania).
