Antique,ceramic,holloways"cure-all" Chemist /apothecary's Ointment Pot Jar Crock For SaleOn offer is this crudely manufactured and printed, antique ceramic "Holloway's" quack, medical/pharmacy ointment pot/jar. The jar's original contents were used as an external kind of "cure-all" as detailed by the numerous exaggerated claims on the wall of the pot (see pics 3 & 4). Thomas Holloway became a very rich man through the world-wide sales of his numerous "medicinal" cures and ointments starting in the mid 1800's and continuing through to the early 20 th century. He marketed his products very skilfully, and these little pots were exported to all the British colonies and to United States as well. The pot is in good shape. It reveals the customary glaze-crazing, and has one, hardly noticeable small "nibble" on the base circumference edge....really nothing much at all! The pot measures just under 2" in diameter and 1 1/2" tall.
Great little antique pharmacy piece for your collection! FOR VIEWERS WHO MAY NOT BE FAMILIAR WITH THESE DELIGHTFUL LITTLE JARS....THEY WERE USED BETWEEN APPROX. 1840-1920 TO MARKET VARIOUS PRODUCTS WHICH CAME IN A PASTE FORM. AFTER WWI THEY BECAME OBSOLETE AS MORE MODERN AND ECONOMICAL FORMS OF PACKAGING REPLACED THEM.THE RECOVERY AND COLLECTING OF THESE OLD PIECES HAS BECOME A POPULAR, WORLD-WIDE HOBBY, AND A QUAINT REMINDER OF A BYGONE ERA. BE ASSURED, YOU ARE offerDING ON A GENUINE AND AUTHENTIC PERIOD PIECE.
