This beautiful doll has been loved for over a century, and has been evidently well cared for during this span of life. At 12.5 inches she is quite small, the perfect size for any glass cabinet or display case. I still remember falling in love with her delicate appearance and innocent expression. The painting on this doll is not only beautiful, but joyful. With an articulated neck, she has a way of turning her head and flirtatiously glancing at anyone whose attention she has captured.
Her condition is almost pristine. The bisque is very pale and sets off the blush on her cheeks, the delicately painted mouth, and the blue-grey glass eyes. There are no hairlines, cracks, or any such damage on the face or the breast plate. One earring hole seems to have broken down and then replaced with clay. While the other earring hole is just a bit wider than probably was original. Otherwise, she is in excellent shape. She comes with a wig
As far as kid leather bodies go, hers is extremely well maintained. The stitching is extremely stable. The body is of a great color that only shows the slightest discoloration. It is a firm and well stuffed body. There are no missing fingers or noteworthy blemishes. Her legs seem to have gusset jointing. But she can’t sit down.
She wears a royal toilette, and I have photographed her in front of a royal carriage. The seamstress who created her costume was clearly inspired by one of the most beautiful of the costumes in Mildred Seeley’s book on fashion dolls. It was one of the costumes that Mildred Seeley made a commemorative dinner plate for. The pattern was a complicated one encompassing the full impact of the bustle which is at its widest extent in this look from the early 1870s. The seamstress must have spent a good fortune buying the silk tulle and silk lace that make up the overskirt and sleeves. Silk tulle is the most extravagant of all silk weaves, and its use here makes the doll appear extremely regal. Additionally, the skirt is embroidered with wax flower corsage often seen in doll hats.
It should be noted that the underskirt and bodice appear to be made of polyester taffeta. But it is still well constructed and looks expensive. The skirt is so beautiful, I imagine a silk purist would find a way to pair it with silk bodices that you might own or make. Silk tulle is so expensive, it will immediately enhance the appearance of anything around it.
She comes with underclothes and bustle pad. note regarding shipping: The shipping is only an estimate. You will only be charged what the postage costs unless there is a need to buy special packaging. As a collector of many beautiful things, I am grateful for all the pleasure that I have derived over the years from collecting and displaying my possessions. During this transition period,I am narrowing my collecting to a few select items. Space is increasingly becoming an issue for me, so I am attempting to make a conscious decision to integrate my collectibles and keep them within a certain size limit. That, however, is merely the pragmatic aspect of my situation, because it is difficult to part with my treasures.
I am currently mesmerized by the antique French fashion doll phenomenon, and am busily creating clothing and vignettes for 12 and 16 inch dolls for my 2 dollhouses. I love vintage and antique silks andtrims.
My favorite moderndoll is the Sybarite. She is made by the two designers of Superfrock of England and they are a very elusive and creative team. I happen to sew well and she has reinvigorated my passion for creating haute couture outfits and accessories. To be fair,it all started with Robert Tonner's Tyler and Sydney. The variety of dolls and settings also gave me a chance tobuild a doll house for them and that has been incredibly fulfilling, although painstakingly slow. Other Tonner dolls are very appealing as well. Shauna, Matt, Scarlett, and Marley arefavorites of mine, Then, there are other fashion dolls such as Alex and Gene, whose clothing and accessories aredelightful. The Franklin Mint Scarlett with her incredibly accurate "movie" clothing, Princess Diana, and Rose in the Titanic, and Jason Wu's Avantgardes and Fashion Royalty are all great additions to my collection.
At the other end of the spectrum of resindolls, there is Alice Leverette, who focuses on 19th Century outfits for her Secret Garden and Ultimate Fashion Doll. I own Sage and have made alot of clothing for her. Soon I hope to own Lily, with a premiere jointed body. I belong to several doll clubs on yahoo groups and one locally, as well as UFDC. Doll Shows, conventions, seminars and all things related to dolls give me incredible joy and satisfaction. In addition, I have many years of experience creating antique reproductions of French bebes and lady dolls. I won a professional Millie award and a Golden Flame award. I have a lovefor detail and pride myself on making beautiful things in the full reverence of the antiques. I hope that you can enjoy them as they are presented over the next few months.
