Antique 1813 Colonel John Washington Patterson Sterling & Rosewood Walking Stick For Sale
You are offerding on a stunning antique 1813 era Colonel John Washington Patternson sterling silver and rosewood walking stick. This piece measures a total of 35 inches in length. It features a sterling silver cap that measures 1 3/4 inches in diameter by 2 1/4 inches in length. The cap reads “Col. J. W. Patterson Born Feb. 22nd 1813, Margaret A. Griffin Born Jan. 19th 1814” on the top. Around the edge of the sterling cap it is engraved “Married Dec. 24 1833”, “Celebrated 50th Anniversary Dec. 24 1883”, “62nd Wedding Day Dec. 24 1895”. The sterling cap features a stunning detailed repousse flower and swirl/scroll design. The cap is marked “Sterling” at the bottom. The walking stick appears to be made of rosewood. It features two inlayed rings that are possibly made of solid 14K gold however they have not been tested to avoid damage to the piece. The base of the walking stick features a base metal cap. Col. John Washington Patterson was born near Creagerstown, MD. Margaret Ann Griffin was born in Shepardstown, VA. They were married in 1833 in Tiffin, OH. Records show that they lived there for a few years and then moved to Brooklyn, NY. John Washington Patternson passed away in Brooklyn, NY on Dec. 31, 1896. Margaret Ann Griffin passed away in Brooklyn, NY on April 5, 1901. I did find records that show there was a Col. John Washington Patterson that served in the Civil War out of New York however I am not sure if this is the correct person. Overall this piece is truly stunning in every way. The rosewood is in excellent condition with a couple very light scuffs. The sterling silver cap is in great condition with one slight push as seen in photo #6. The base metal cap on the bottom does show some signs of wear from use and is slightly loose as the nail is starting to come out.
