Antique 1853 School Girl Cross Stitch Sampler Rhode Island Provenance Rare :
Wonderful antique School Girl sampler. Arcade Sewing School in Providence, Rhode Island. Louisa Matilda Dyer Age 13. This cross stitch sampler contains the alphabet in capital letters and also in lower cap. Has numbers 1 thru 10. The prayer reads.."Thou shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy strength and with all thy mind and they neighbour as thyself." Diamond border on bottom with 2 unfinished diamond shapes. The frame is of wood with black and red paint. The back paper liner is falling apart and needs to be replaced. Measures 12 1/2"tall and is 12 1/2"wide. The letter "o& u" of Louisa is missing. The letter "r" in Dyer is incomplete. The "1" in age 13 is incomplete as well as the "1" in 1853 is incomplete. The thin tan border between "God with all thy heart and with" next line "all thy soul and with all thy" is loosing thread. The background of linen is the color of a brown paper bag.Thecolors are very vivid and I believe the thread is wool. This sampler has great provenance. There is an Arcade building in Providence and I wonder if this Arcade Sewing School was once located at that site. In the 1800's girls would be schooled in needlework and they were trained to excell in stitch which would also include sewing clothing, weaving, etc.
